Net label sinewave have posted an album made by a friend of mine who lives in the depths of Minas Gerais. It's nice mellow anbient stuff, with a mid-nineties feel, a sound that's due for a comeback. The multi-talented Francisco Zelesnikar did the cover and I wrote a text to accompany the download which the label deemed unworthy so here it is in full:

Genre: ambient house, downtempo, armchair techno

Imagine, if you will, a Greek farmer living in the mountains of Minas Gerais, Brazil, no internet connection, connected to the nearest road by a 7 kilometre dirt track and who has to get up at the crack of dawn to tend his animals, this is Rothis Bournias, not your average ambient house producer.
These tracks were recorded at the end of 2008, hence the title, and are a fine representation of what this prolific musician is producing at the moment.
Perhaps due to the archaic Yamaha keyboard he uses or maybe due to his own personal taste but these tracks are a distinct reminder of the releases from the Fax and Apollo labels in the early nineties, labels at the forefront of ambient house and what was being defined as Intelligent Dance Music (IDM), a sound long due for a revival.
But don't let these outdated definitions put you off, Rothis adds something new to the genre and his idyllic farming lifestyle shines through in these tracks where you will find chattering, engaging drum patterns, candescent textures combined with winsome and memorable melodies. Download, sit back, drink your tea or whatever it is you do to relax... and enjoy.

Local good-old boy Thaigo Fuzz, agitator of many fine musical events here in my hometown of Ribeirão Preto, has released a virtual ep with his pet project Alma Mater. I have seen them perform many times and if late 80's shoegazing with dashes of post-rock are your cup of tea then you should go ahead and download it, after all it's free!

Now shoegazing was something I never thought would come back as it seemed pretty lightweight even at the time. However, I suppose it makes some sense as its effects drenched sound nicely accompanies current soundscape shaping acts. Over at XLR8R magazine there is an excellent podcast of shoegaze material old and new that is well worth downloading. I surprised myself by how enjoyable I found this mix/blend, as seeing many of these bands firsthand, Ride, Swervedriver etc, I remember being distinctly unimpressed, much prefering the psychedelic assault of The Butthole Surfers or Sonic Youth.

Starting to blog some posts over at Man Recorder the Man recordings blog. The posts will mainly deal with new Brazilian releases that are downloadable and perhaps some cultural things as well.
The first one is about Charque side of the moon, a great version of the Pink Floyd album in full but done by a collective of musicians from Belem in Pará, the largest populated area in the Amazon. Go there and download it, it's worth a listen!

A Man Recordings Blog exclusive, here we have available for the first time three remixes left overfrom the Não Wave Revisited Project. “Não Wave –Brazilian Post-Punk 1982-1988”, which was the first releasefrom Man Recordings in 2005 and is a fascinating document of a fertile period in Brazilian music and received great reviews from Pitchfork to the Village Voice.

Agentss "Agentes"

A Technopop band that were the predecessors of theBrazilian new wave. Formed in 1980, they released anindependent single ("Agentes" / "Angra") in 1982, andanother for a major label ("Professor Digital" /"Cidade Industrial") in 1983, splitting up in the sameyear. The few live shows they did always had a hugeimpact. The leader, vocalist and keyboard playerKodiak Bachine continued with an obscure solo work,while the guitarists Orion Mike (Miguel Barella) andDuo (Eduardo Amarante) went on to work in importantbands in the following years such as Voluntários daPatria and Azul 29.

Black Future "Eu Sou O Rio"
The darkest ("dark" being the name given to Brazilianpre-goths) and most experimental band from Rio deJaneiro, where the radical musical scene was basedround the club "Crepúsculo de Cubatão" owned by theexiled English bank robber, Ronnie Biggs. Black Futurewere led by vocalist Márcio Satanésio and keyboardplayer, violinist and artist Tantão, two eccentriccomposers from the bohemian neighbourhood of Lapa,influenced by pop culture in general and comics inparticular. The group appeared in 1983 and the albumwas released in 1988, promptly disappearing. One ofthe most well-known tracks is "Eu Sou O Rio" (I amRio), which ironically celebrates the city, mixingpunk funk and samba.

Sempre presente no Correio Popular também apareceu em matérias da revista Metrópole e do telejornal da EPTV. Foi duas vezes indicado para melhor balada no Guia Veja Campinas.

Em novembro de 2006 o Clube Informal 2 abriu mais estruturado para baladas mais fortes, expandindo com público mais jovem no mesmo segmento. Também foi indicado para as categorias melhor balada e melhor fim de noite no Guia Veja Campinas 2007.

Os principais nomes do rock independente feito no Brasil poderão ser conferidos nos próximos dias 10 e 11 de novembro, quando será realizado o Groselha Fuzz Festival 2007, em Ribeirão Preto, no interior paulista (330 km de São Paulo). Além dos shows, o evento terá discotecagem, exposições como o "Arquivo do Rock Brasileiro", grafite, exibições de vídeos, encenações teatrais e debate entre o público, produtores e músicos. O mestre de cerimônias do festival será o ex-VJ da MTV Luiz Thunderbird.

BAILE PUNK

TUTU se une ao Clube Informal e traz 2 dos principais nomes do festival Groselha Fuzz, em balada de aquecimento.

A principal atração da noite é o Montage, grupo de eletro-rock que saiu de Fortaleza e hoje se prepara para turnê européia. Em seu curriculum festivais como o Abril Pro-Rock, Campari Rock, Tim Festival e shows no Clash (SP), Fosfobox (RJ) e 4 vezes incendiando o já quentíssimo Clube Informal. Além das músicas altamente dançantes, conta com performances sempre arrasadoras do vocalista Daniel Peixoto.

Outro grande nome do Groselha presente na noite é o dj/vj Andy Cumming. Antes de se tornar residente no Clube Informal e criar o coletivo TUTU, trabalhou na cena rave londrina com projeções em shows de grupos cult como The Orb e nas primeiras edições do aclamado festival Sònar em Barcelona. Recentemente colaborou com selos europeus na organização das compilações Não-Wave (de rock pós-punk paulista) e Favela Booty Beats 1 e 2 (de funk carioca). Neste ano fez turnê com Edu K e o produtor alemão Daniel Haaksman (Tim Festival), cruzando discopunk, punk-funk e vanguarda européia.

Sub-Uzi, que se apresenta pela primeira vez em Ribeirão Preto é a dupla de djs Prof Alcides + Leo Ciccio, de Campinas. Seu som explora as vertentes do electro-funk, gênero criado por Afrika Bambaata que está na raiz do miami-bass, do funk carioca e do detroit ghetto-tech. Nos cases 2Live Crew, Dynamix, Aux88, Peaches, M.I.A., dj Assault, dj Godfather e o cult Bonde do Rolê.

Na abertura da noite será exibido o documentário 'Sou Feia, Mas Tô na Moda' de Denise Garcia. O filme conta o início do funk, inspirado no Miami Bass, gênero dos anos 1980, e passa pela transformação dos bailes violentos em bailes do prazer. Segundo o olhar da diretora e de seus entrevistados, o funk colaborou para uma postura menos submissa das mulheres, que dão voz aos seus desejos e lutam pela igualdade de direitos, principalmente sexuais. Após entrevistar funkeiras e filmar os bailes no Rio o documentário acompanha a internacionalização do funk, estilo que conquistou espaço na Europa, com apresentações de Marlboro no festival espanhol Sonar e em casas noturnas na França, Inglaterra, Alemanha e Eslovênia. O DJ aparece ciceroneado pela dupla brasileira Tetine, que já se apresentou no Clube Informal e mantém um programa de rádio em Londres dedicado ao funk carioca. O filme estreou no Festival Rio de Cinema em 2005 e já tem carreira internacional. Imperdível!

I have a review of La Rumba Computer by Nego Moçambique up at Stylus, that goes something like this...

Rumba is originally an African rhythm, but Cubans made it famous. Similarly, Brazil’s own slave music mutated after it came here into samba and other cadences like maracatu and mangue. As such, it shouldn’t be all that much of a surprise to hear how producer Marcelo de Jesús—aka Nego Moçambique—has managed to imbue his second release with the diaspora of Africa, be it Nigerean Afrobeat, Afrika Baambata’s “Planet Rock,” legendary Brazilian slave rebel Zumbi, or Herbie Hancock’s Headhunters. He’s just taking what’s been handed to him and refashioning it into exciting new forms. umba is originally an African rhythm, but Cubans made it famous. Nesta edição do fim de tarde musical do TUTU teremos como convidado especial a banda Radiola Santa Rosa, de Guarujá, formado por Caio Bosco, rapper e músico, e Beto, dj turnitablista.

Com influências da tropicália, do dub jamaicano, do hip-hop, dois CDs lançados e apresentações em diversas unidades do SESC, o grupo tem como principal desafio romper as fronteiras de rótulos culturais, artísticos e musicais, funcionando como num ritual antropofágico, canibal. Man recordings have got a couple of cracking releases in the baile funk vein coming up and really seem to be taking the sound further.

Firstly, there's the new vinyl from the "funk Mundial" series, which is kind of a glitch house(or should I say Blog House) / speed or uk garage/ baile funk mixture. I'm looking forward to playing it on the dancefloor and seeing how people react. It has all the ingredients to work; skipping beat, deep growling bass and funk-style chanting.

There's also the second addition to the "Baile funk masters" series by DJ Sany Pitbull. This is an amazing EP and is described as post-baile funk, a term which I would use more for acts like Bonde de Role, or even Edu K, but this is almost prog-baile funk, with its sparse use of the Tamborzão break and the totally out there samples. The excellent mash up that is "Funk Alemão" you can download at Fat Planet. Fat Planet have been putting Bonde James Bonde on their playlist recently so you gotta luv 'em.

There's a good interview with dan "da (haaks)man" of Man Recs, pictured here with Mr Catra, at this Rio Baile Funk Blog ,which also has a lengthy interview with Sany worth checking out.

Someone has posted Edu K doing "Popozuda Rock 'n Roll" at the The São Paulo show in the Inferno club. The night was a bit weird to say the least, it was full of rock 'n rollers (with names like "Johnny rebel" or "Danny Poison" no doubt) who didn't want to dance at all - they kept asking for stuff with guitars, which is what I thought I was playing, the pay was dreadful, I had my jumper stolen and the list goes on. DJing highlight must have been when my partner Daniel Haaksman was tired and pissed off and desperate to get home wanted to clear the dancefloor (which was pretty sparse anyway) and put on "Mustapha" by Queen, I mean have you heard this track? It's insane, what was Freddie Mercury thinking?
The show by Edu was blindin' though as you can see from the clip, which wildly goes in and out of focus but you get the vibe!

Now while poking around on youtube I found this bizarre clip which is Edu K with his old group De Falla on "Sabadão" with Gugu doing the very same song, Popozuda rock 'n roll. For the non-brazilians Sabadão was a saturday afternoon programme and gugu is a tv personality of the lowest order who plugs his own line of childrens toys throughout his godawful show. View and weep!

and finally I must plug my friend Per-Christian at Gaaak , who has started a new MP3 blog of Bollywood soundtracks called Music from the Third Floor. PC is serious about his bollywood and this is all stuff from his box of 150 or more vinyls, all impossible to find and yet so easy to download!

Nesta sexta-feira, dia 15 de dezembro, acontece a segunda festa de comemoração dos 4 anos do grupo TUTU, a Lost in Music especial TETINE. Na Lost, o coletivo tenta fugir de rótulos e fórmulas, apostando na qualidade e diversidade musical das suas atrações e também em um público que procura um clima descontraído e animado.
O Tetine é formado por Bruno Verner e Eliete Mejorado. O duo se conheceu em 1995 e, desde então, vem produzido vasta obra experimental, trafegando por universos inusitados (performance art, eletrônica, funk carioca autoral, trilhas sonoras, vídeo art etc…) da cultura pop. Com 10 álbuns lançados por diferentes gravadoras (High School, Bizarre, Slum Dunk, Soul Jazz, Mr Bongo), entre o Brasil e a Europa, Tetine vem se apresentando em festivais, galerias de arte, clubes, cinemas e teatros ao redor do mundo.
O duo fez apresentações recentes em importantes espaços, como WIRE, em Chicago, TROPICÁLIA, em Londres, ETHER 07, no Queen Elizabeth Hall, com curadoria da banda Ladytron, PALAIS DE TOKYIO, m Paris, LIVERPOOL BIENNIAL e SONAR em São Paulo, entre outros.

On Sunday I went to see the above show of Joe Lally playing with various members of Hurtmold. Joe Lally is/used to be one of the main players in Fugazi, and I think perhaps the crowd were expecting lots of rousing and intense punk rock but what they got instead was a very disarming set of delicate bass driven personal tunes. M Takara's accompanying percussion was wonderful, adding a very light almost samba-like touch that perfectly balanced the deep bass drones while joe sang about war and kids and shit.
Small crowd, but what do you expect in the middle of brazil on a sunday, and certainly some very rude punters who insisited on talking loudly during this very quiet and charming set.
I bought the CD after the show, "There to Here", which is pretty much representative of the show with lovely bass tones, perfect for late night listening.

I am currently writing a review of "More Favela Booty beats" for Earplug and got these excellent baile photos that I had to post. Baile funk for me is without a doubt the most happening music in Brazil at the moment, I hear good things like the Parteum mixtape "ergo" or some rock mash-up by Gaub, but da funk is where it's at. The new Edu K "Illegal" have great, great tracks on them, completely dumb and danceable, and the forthcoming Funk Mundial vinyl series from Man Recordings is looking really good. The first release will be Stereotyp with Edu K MCing, it's a dense hypnotic baile based but not-quite baile track. Brazilian dancefloors love it, modern, danceable and electronically funky but with sexy sing-a-long refrains in Portuguese.

The Informal in campinas has been closed by ther local council (anything can happen in election year!) so they've moved to a a new venue. My first night there will be with Daniel Hunt from Ladytron so expect lots of grungy electro and dirty disco.

O convidado especial é DANIEL HUNT. O inglês começou como dj ainda antes de formar o Ladytron, grupo que faz um glam-rock com a sonoridade electro dos 80, sucesso na crítica e no público. Rara oportunidade de estar em contato direto com a ponta da cena electro-rock européia. Daniel se apresentou apenas na D-Edge (SP) e na Mary in Hell (BH). Antes de voltar à Europa vem pro clube informal porque é uma balada legal. Responsa.

Andy Cumming, dj inglês que vive no Brasil e estará nesta segunda noite do evento, compilou a bem sucedida “Não Wave – Brazilian Post-Punk 1982-1988” para o selo alemão Man Recordings, de Daniel Haaksman. Este veio a Campinas ano passado a convite de Andy e discotecou para 200 privilegiados no clube informal. Em 2003 Andy já ajudara a montar a coletânea “Favela Booty Beats – Rio Baile Funk” para o selo alemão Essay Recordings, precursor da onda baile funk que se espalha pela Europa. O mesmo selo lançará o novo cd de Edu K (ex- De Falla) que também é esperado no clube informal. Esse disco já possui remixes por top djs como Diplo (responsável pelos remixes de M.I.A.) incluídas no repertório de Andy junto de novas produções suas que cruzam eletro-rock e funk carioca.

O VJ SPETTO tocou em festivais como o Skolbeats, criou o primeiro software brasileiro para VJs e no último ano realizou trabalhos para corporações– Microsoft, Lycra, MTV, Motorola, entre outras – assim como para espaços museus, galerias e mostras. Produziu video-cenários – para artistas como Gilberto Gil, Jorge Ben Jor, Pato Fu - vídeos, temas, workshops (inclusive no clube informal).

I have a piece in the new issue of Earplug about the segundo mundo label which you can check out here.
The label does good work with releasing and developing new artists and I feel they need supporting as it must be a thankless task with the current musical climate in Brazil. Though there's no lack of new bands and people experimenting and producing interesting new stuff there's no outlet for these people, certainly not the radio, which is a pointless exercise even turning on - it makes british daytime radio look like Resonance FM.
So where do they go? Myspace I suppose.

Back in Brazil...after a month in Britain and a brief visit to France. Bought the pictured contraption in the UK as I was needing a new turntable, but somehow the internal speaker manages to sound better than when I put it through my mixer and amp set up.

Something of a djing highlight when I got back as I played at SESC literally hours after arriving in the country. It was packed out, nearly 400 people, and I found myself high up on a stage nervously going through a set of baile funk, my own mash-ups and some mixed up rock, a particular stormer being the MSTRKRFT mix of "Woman" by Wolfmother.

My good friend Per-Christian at Gaaak has started his own label, sad gnome records, and the first release is a limited release 7 " vinyl (surely a huge money making scheme if ever there was one) by the Indelicates. You can hear the mp3 here, and jolly good it is too, a very cynical paean to the youth of today (or any day for that matter).

I'm back.....

after much chaos, moving flat, no broadband etc.

Lots of new projects to be getting on with. But anyway I'm reading this book on the left at the moment. I was a bit dubious about picking it up as last year I had read the excellently gossipy "Love saves the Day: A History of American Dance Music Culture, 1970-1979" by Tim Lawrence and felt it would probably cover the same ground. However, I underestimate Peter Shapiro who is a consistently entertaining writer, his comparisons always crack me up. for example when discussing Amon Duul II, he describes them as having "...less regard for structure than a feminist film-maker".

I remember a piece Shapiro did for Spin magazine about 8 years ago when he went to Norway or some such country to partake in an air guitar festival and he performed to Foghat, it was a really funny article. it's a pity he isn't writing more for the Wire. Is he blogging anywhere?

In fact, it's a pity that many of the great writers aren't writing for The Wire anymore, or at least writing very little. Where are the Shapiro's, Reynolds, Sinkers, Penmans? Are they fed up of the Wire's reportedly bad pay, it's such a dull read at the moment. I mean the content is there , but it's just so.....boring!

The quiet Sunday afternoon bash at the Cauim cinema turned into a full on rave with a jumping and screaming dancefloor. So much for my laid back funky samba vibe, my set turned into a full on baile funk set with Edu K bootlegs. The final track of the night - at the grand hour of ten pm - was the tim deluxe mix of "Seven Nation Army", a deliberate ploy by me to make the punters crazy, and crazy they went!
I wish I had some photos to put up.

clube informal celebrates one year of existence this week with 3 parties culminating in a big bash on Saturday where I shall be DJing along with some damn fine company.
DuVa and spetto shall be doing their vjing thing which will be no less than fascinating. Details (in portuguese below).
Duva's work veers more towards video art than full on rave VJing and can be quite beautiful while spetto is more of a bonkers tech-head (tech as in technology rather than techno) experience.

A interesting story in the guardian yesterday about the very dubious concept of a favela hotel.
I think I may know this favela as it is behind a building I used to stay in when I first went to Rio and it certainly didn't seem like an ideal tourist destination.

Brazil's president Lula contributes an article to today's Guardian about alternative fuel options being developed in Brazil. Alcohol driven cars have been an option in Brazil for ages now and I've always fancied having one though prices (of the fuel) have rocketed recently making it less attractive to the pocket.

Rather amusing snippet of video here to promote "sex-o-matic", the new single by Edu K. it's been filmed at an authentic baile and the guy featured certainly gets a good going over. Of the mixes on the single the solid groove mix seems to be getting the most attention, especially as it's getting played by Gilles Peterson, the DJ Mavi & DJ Sany baile funk mix is also getting blogged due to its backwards GnR sample, but for me the DJ Edgar mix is outstanding, just minimal baile beats.

So my good friend Per-Christian at gaaak.com asks the good question what would I choose? Well a desert island disc is a tricky one isn't it, one album to listen to.....forever! But the real meaning of the question is what is, in your opinion, the best album ever made, or what is your favourite album?
So you could choose one of the all time greats, say " Let it Bleed", "Tago-Mago", "In a silent Way", "For Your Pleasure", 3rd Velvets and a long etc. But if the text was for publication in a book like the one mentioned below, you could use the opportunity to talk a about a personal cult favourite, something probably unknown by the majority of the readers, and attach a personal story to it and thus creating a much more involving text.

So mine would be ....

errr...what? I hear you say. No believe me this is a great album. Very noisy and very psychedelic. And it was, believe it or not, so righteously resurrected just last week in an article in stylus magazine by kentish man/man of kent ( I never know which) Ian Shelley. So why would I choose this? Well it came out at the tail end of the eighties and the production by rudy from AR Kane really is studio as instrument stuff, Can-like at times and definitely pre-dates the post-rock sound. I frequently used to dj the groovy final track "pony boy" in barcelona and it rocked the house.
But my text would talk about my time in London in the East end, where the band were based - russell anyway - and doing shows with them, showing slides and super-8 films as their backdrop and what a riot that was. And also the other bands hanging around in that area, Find me a priest, Tab Hunter all-stars, Snap -Cabinet, Hank and Leej's xmas pub band who I can't remember the name of etc. There definitely was a lot of creativity around but none of it very serious at all. It would make for an interesting text to say the least, and perhaps something I will one day go into detail here.

just finished reading "Noite Passada um disco salvou minha vida" which means "last night a disc/album saved my life" (....groan) which has the old chestnut of ( Brazilian) journalists and writers choosing their desert island disc and saying why. So apart from the dubious title and the terrible cover ( I mean who approves these things? it's not as if São paulo is lacking great graphic designers) and the even sloppier presentation inside there are some nice pieces, not least by Alex Antunes and Alexander Matias.
Alex chooses the first clash album but talks about the death and the proceeding journey to the hospital of a musician friend. It illustrates why alex is one the best music journlists in Brazil in that it mixes the personal and the irreverent with a lot of humour. Matias's piece on New order is superb as well and I went to slsk and downloaded substance straight after reading it. Other good texts are by Clarah Averbuck and Beto lee Carvalho (who I've just found out is the son of ex-mutantes singer Rita Lee) talks about the result of going to school in full KISS make-up.
Mind you there is a lot of flat boring pieces in the book so you have to wade through it all. But where is Fabio Massari? Was he invited? and where is the underground? A lot of it is media chums celebrating their mostly awful taste or wallowing in nostalgia.

I'll be in Campinas again this Saturday the 3rd of December playing at Clube Informal up to my usual shenanigans of playing disco punk and baile funk ( and anything inbetween really). Friday night they have Bid as a guest dj. I saw his live set here in Ribeirão earlier this year and it was a great mix of funk and samba soul, he had put together a group consisting of some real greats from the 70s black Rio scene, so if I were in Campinas I would be going - and so should you!

Currently reading "This Band could be your life" by Michael Azerrad which chronicles the American underground scene during the 80's. In fact the chapter in Simon Reynolds "Rip it up and start again" that deals with American progressive punk is a condensed version of this book. However, I have just finished the frankly hilarious chapter on the Butthole surfers and it got me reminiscing about the times I saw them play in London during the 80's. The first time particularly sticks in my mind, at the Clarendon in Hammersmith, where I met John Peel and had a brief chat with him and he was charming and polite as everyone says he was and took time to talk to the gormless indie-kid that I was. Local east-end boys AR Kane were supporting and played a mild mannered and subdued set compared to what was to come. Russell soon left AR kane after this show to form the much more feral Terminal Cheesecake, I like to believe that he was inspired by the forthcoming event. Because it was truly an event! A constant strobe, smoke, flames, highway disaster films and onstage anarchy all soundtracked by a whirling psychedelic din. Afterwards I sat shellshocked on the tube going home.
The next day I was listening to John peel on the radio and he remarked how utterly gobsmacked he was after the surfers show.

After seeing another surfers show in Notting hill years later, I was with a group of friends chatting and drinking and singer Gibby came over to hang out and chat with us. We were in awe and wanted him to regale us with wild on the road tales but he was more into talking about his new found obsession of firing guns! He hung around for hours while we bought him drinks making for a memorable evening, the kind that can happen quite often by chance in London, which makes me miss London all the more.

Great interview with Gilberto Gil here, surely the coolest politician alive. Gil comes over as the voice of reason when it comes to copyrights and intellectual property but also in comparison to all the bitching and backbiting that is going on in Brasilia at the moment.
Despite being a) a politician and b) a huge star, he always comes over as someone who oozes brazilian warmth and humility.

Fine time had by all on Saturday night at Clube Informal in Campinas. Da Haaksman played an absolutely sterling set of disco funk, baile funk and anything inbetween. The boy did me proud! Photos here. Amidst my bunglings I dropped the remix of Black Future's "Eu Sou o Rio" by Munk which really went well and seemed to rock the house to a moderate degree. We managed to play about four remixes of De falla "Popozuda Rockn'roll" between us. Always a great crowd to play to at the Informal. Chapa Quente will return in November!

After the release of the acclaimed CD compilation „ Não Wave – Brazilian Post Punk 1982-1988“ (MAN 01) MAN RECORDINGS now presents the follow up release: "Não Wave Revisited“.

The EP´s title says it all. This is a new view on the fantastic Brazilian music phenomenon of the 1980s which became known in the Northern hemisphere only with the recent release of the „ Não Wave“ CD. For the „Não Wave Revisited“ EP we´ve asked four illustrous protagonists of today to dedicate themselves to the exciting Brazilian sound of yesterday and to present their interpretations of the phenomenon with remixes and edits.

MUNK from Munich, Germany, who recently debuted with their acclaimed „Apertivo“ album kick off the EP with an edit of „Eu Sou O Rio“ by Black Future, one of the few Brazilian post punk bands from Rio de Janeiro. With their „MUNK Rework“ the masterminds of the infamous GOMMA label revised the Black Future track as a 1970s disco edit. The intro extended, the energetic passages highlighted, ending with a rhythm passage that is perfect for beat mixing DJs. A state of the art edit, which will bring the still fresh sounding, percussive punk funk sound of Black Future onto many of todays dancefloors.

THE GLIMMERS from Eskimo Recordings in Ghent, Belgium, who catapulted themselves into the world league of DJs with their „DJ Kicks“ mix on !K7 records earlier this year, remixed „Agentss“ by the band Agentss. With parts of the spacey song, which single-handedly started the post punk era in Brasil 1982, THE GLIMMERS created a mellow grooving mix, suitably titled the „Slow Dance Mix“. A version that resembles the best of Kraftwerk and Krautrock, Cosmic Disco and Dub all at once. The vocal parts in German language are taken from the original – in 1982, the Agentss were big fans of German bands like Kraftwerk, Fehlfarben and DAF.

TIM „LOVE“ LEE, head of Tummy Touch records, made a new interpretation of „Iô Iô“ by the Voluntariós Da Patria. In a trademark Tim „Love“ Lee style, resembling his legendary mid 90s edits like „Again Son“ or „Superrapping Nr.5“, the New York based, mostly bearded Londoner stretched the most important bits, added echos and the sound of a Theremin. An edit in which Brazilian post punk meets British humour in a Jamaican dub chamber.

MARCO, who provided the last edit on this EP, is a Berlin DJ who has edited and remixed bands like Phoenix, Outkast or Tosca. He made a minimalist variation of Azul 29´s groovy dark wave anthem „Ciencias Sensuais“, for which he simply extended the intro – perfect for DJ use.

Busy night on Saturday. I will open for the always excellent Groselha Festival with a mix of Post-Punk and groovy rock, catch a few bands and then down to the Porão to close the night for KL Jay of Os Racionais with a set of Funk, hip-hop and whatever.

The Porão has been unmissable lately, packed out, with a really receptive crowd. Undoubtedly the best club night in Ribeirão by far.

Those who know me, know that I have a penchant for baile funk, even djing a bit every now and then. Here is an article on the subject by Alex Bellos, an English guy who writes about all things brazilian in The Guardian and Observer.
It's quite a good article, though focussing a bit too much on the violent aspects of it rather than the DIY musical angle, which is what I find interesting.
The five baile hits list at the end can't be faulted though as a good beginners guide.
